Amobi Okugo is a professional soccer player, a student working towards my undergraduate degree, the founder of the financial-literacy blog Frugal Athlete and that’s only the beginning.
He’s been a Major League Soccer player since 2010, when he was drafted after his freshman year at UCLA as part of the 2010 Generation Adidas Class. Now playing for the Portland Timbers, he has amassed more than 150 competition appearances, and was honored to have represented the United States through various youth national teams including the 2012 Olympic squad.
As he pursues his career in soccer, he is also pursuing his secondary education. He will graduate in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leader and Development, with a minor in Business Administration. And then it will be on to graduate school.
Since he was a child, he also always been interested in financial literacy and wealth creation, and that interest has only grown over the years. Throughout the years, he has been the butt of my teammates’ jokes about his “frugal” tendencies, but when it comes tax time, they line up with questions! So that’s why he created the Frugal Athlete, to help shine a light on the financial decisions that athletes are faced with and increase financial literacy, with not only resources but also stories from athletes themselves.
